Career Technical Student of the Year- Yessica Moran

Was nominated as the Piner High representative for our ROP programs to hopefully be recognized for her effort, ability and enthusiasm in our HSB program. She is our HOSA president and also won a HOSA State Scholarship from Kaiser for $ 500. She did her internship with Dr. Laura Martin, Dr. Jimmy Wu, and Dr. Christensen at Vista Clinic, and is a dedicated young woman with a career goal of Family Physician.
A Strong finish to a great year…

Biotech 1 is finishing up our Environmental Biotechnology Unit with students producing an authentic Environmental Field Study.  They are choosing a natural environment of their own and assessing its overall health. Students are collecting samples of plants and animals, doing water quality testing of creeks and ponds and assessing habitat conditions.  Students are using Computer Based Probes to collect data, enter it into spreadsheets and graph it!. And, they are enjoying the beautiful Spring Days we are havingJ

This Summer, a few of our students are doing a special program at SSU. They are working in the genetics lab, designing the procedures that will be used next year by our first year students to find Genetically Modified Food Genes  in various food products.
This summer program will take place over two weeks and have students using state of the art molecular techniques, working alongside Dr. Derek Girman and his assistant Ryan Williamson.  These students will learn first- hand, what it takes to not only perform techniques such as gel electrophoresis and PCR, but help to organize and fine-tune procedures that will be employed in the fall.  We will then be able to grind up food like OREOS and CHEETOS to test if they have been genetically modified!  And….students will earn a stipend to participate!

Biotech II:

For our final project of the year, our HSB year II class has created a lab experiment that compares different types of athletes and how they perform in various exercise ranging from standing broad jump to wall sits and sit ups.  We compared Explosive, Endurance and Non-athletes. Each athlete performed the same exercise (10 total) and the results were recorded and graphed.

 The Data was awesome!!!!

Each student was represented in the graphs so we could compare what type of athlete was the most well- rounded in the various events.  We concluded that the endurance athletes have the widest range of abilities and performed the best on average in the events.

Summer Health Career Institute has accepted 3 of our Health Career Students. There were over 125 candidates this year and we are proud of these folks for achieving this opportunity:  SteffanieTran, Pim
                                                      Khunmom and Samantha Woldu

HOSA- Health Occupation Students of America

This third year we now have over 20 members. We have the largest attending group at our State Leadership Conference in Sacramento in categories of Sports Medicine, Medical Math, Forensics, Medical Photography and CPR. We say goodbye to founding members Dave Tran, Yessica Moran and Holley Maassen but leave HOSA in good hands.
